Summing a variable number of rows - how, without a macro?

    As the title says..

I have a cell with a number in it and, across from that, a variable number of cells in 1 column. I want to sum them, but the number of cells depends on the cell with the number in it.

I know I can do it with macros - but can I do it using formulas?

    Any clues appreciated.

    regards

    Alan
