I know what this is, but...

This popup happens sometimes for no reason -- I haven't clicked a file that would have some questionable association. Is there a way to turn this off, or do I just "wait?"

    Chuck,

It's not necessarily questionable association just one that is not currently in the associations table. What was the extension of the file you clicked on? Have you checked the file association for that extension? Remember a lot of programs attempt to take over file associations for file types they consider their own. So if you've installed any software in the recent past the install may have messed up your associations.

Is it possible for two programs to consider a particular ext their own at the same time? Also, sometimes file association here and there need to be re-moored.

Yes, it is possible. An example I can use is the .ged format, used by genealogy programs and a graphics editor I've used since the mid-'90s called Arts and Letters Express. To use the files I have to right-click and choose Open with. Fortunately the genealogy uses family names in the file name, makes it easier.

OK guys, thanks. Maybe it's just a "weak" association...Hooray for NirSoft!
