    Excel (Office 97 Professional)

What causes excel to display the message the file is already open. Even if I know that it is not open. I have tried to open the file from the pull down menu and the open button. Please help me out with this problem.

Are you sure it is not opened but hidden? - check Window - Unhide...

Workbooks can also be opened automatically if referenced to by another:

I am sure that it is not open. It does not show up in the taskbar or the task list. It also does not show up when I hit Ctrl Alt Del.

Is the file on a local drive or network?
Can you open it by double-clicking in Explorer?

If the file is not actually open, that usually means that the file has gotten left in the Operating System open file list. The only thing I have found to correct this problem is to reboot the system. I have found that the lounge software is particularly bad about having this happen when you open a file attached to a forum message.

It is possible that Ctrl Alt Del will only show that Excel is running rather than individual files.
Try clicking File|Close (not, File|Exit). That will close the current file, leaving Excel running. It's possible that another file will be running minimized in the Excel window and you didn't know it was there.
Lastly, I've seen add-ins cause this msg to occur. Could that be the problem?
