    Create a USB rescue drive

A friend's pc has a troublesome app that does not allow it to be uninstalled. In fact, the app doesn't seem to allow itself to be stopped or closed. The pc is running Win Vista and apparently a mal-performing malware remover called SpyHunter 4. What steps can I take on my Win 8.1 pc to create a bootable USB thumb drive that I can take to the stricken pc to end the program and remove the offending app? What capacity USB drive will I need 4gb/8gb/16gb? I see that MS Security Center can provide some solutions, but I'm sure that I'll need to terminate SpyHunter4 first. Are there other suggestions for cleaning and securing (removing malware, et al.).

Any other tips, tricks or traps I should be made aware of will be appreciated.

You might try booting into Safe Mode and attempt removing the app.

If you suspect malware, try the following...

    1. Download AdwCleaner, right-click on the EXE and select Run as Administrator. Click Scan and when that completes, click Clean and follow the prompts.

    2. Download the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and install it. Run Malwarebytes and update the the database. Select Scan > Custom Scan, and click Scan Now. Check the Scan for Rootkits box and click Start Scan. Follow the instructions for anything it finds.

    3. Download the Junkware Removal Tool, right-click on the EXE and select Run as Administrator.

Some of these programs can take a while, so be patient and let them run to completion.

    Let us know the results.

    The PC is running Vista...

    Otherwise your recommendations make sense.

    Missed that...thanks.

Digital distribution is dead for both retail and OEM Vista.

Hopefully, the user has a Vista disk.

I think the OP has already found that out, Browni

    Hello Arcturus16a:

At the risk of taking this thread further off course, as of Friday, May 1, 2015, the Better Business Bureau (West Florida BBB) has documented ninety-two (92) Total Closed Complaints for the Enigma Software Group USA, LLC, the distributor of SpyHunter 4.

BBB & Enigma Software Group USA, LLC.

Thank you for tolerating this detour and HTH

JWoods & Browni - What do your references to "the pc is running Vista" mean to me? I don't know if there is an original Vista disk (but probably not). Does this invalidate JWoods suggested three steps?

    The steps would still apply.
