How to open a corrupted Word 10 file

I was just a few hours away from finishing a 3-year-long project . . . saving it . . . when the program locked up. I got a message that the file was too large to save although I've been saving it for some time. Another message came up saying the document code didn't match the saved doc code. I let some time go by. Tried saving again with no luck. I can see the file is there and is the correct size. Last saved date agrees with the time I started seeing the messages about "unable to save."

Can you suggest a way to open this file?

You might try the Open and Repair option...

Backing the document up frequently to a removable drive is also recommended.

I had the option to restore the file, but when I tried I got the same message "file cannot be opened"

Have you tried opening it in e.g. LibreOffice?

I have succeeded in rescuing corrupt Word files on a couple of occasions by opening them in Open Office (free download, albeit rather large !).
