Exclamation How to Enable WD Icon

    Build 10122

Some people wanted the Windows Defender icon that leads to its Control Window. By default it is not in Applications nor Show hidden icons (Taskbar).

    > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Defender*. Scroll down to Use Windows Defender, click it. The familiar WD window appears... whether minimised or closed its icon will now be in the Show hidden icons.

    * Or type windows defender into Search

    Cheers,
    Drew

Windows Defender Status Manager works well for me on Windows 8.1.

(I don't think there's any method without some small addon like this.)

    Jim,

Gimme a few & I'll check, refresh my memory... I'll have to go to 8.1. I don't recall having to do anything much or special. Will get back to you asap.

    Cheers,

Ok, Jim & went back to 8.1 to confirm what I thought. Basically, no. One can pin WD to Start & or Taskbar BUT, its icon cannot be made to stay in Show hidden icons. Same as Win10, it is not there by default. However it will show in the Sys Tray if & when it needs attention from the End User, otherwise, not there.

    Doesn't survive a restart though.

Just remembered this about W7, don't know if W8 is the same though:
    Taskbar --> Properties --> Taskbar buttons --> Never Combine;
sometimes when I go into this area for the very first time, I find this instead: Always Combine, Hide Labels.
I immediately change it to: Never Combine. Apply, Ok.
Not sure if this would affect what you want to do, or not.

Addendum: Later Bruce posted, and he is right as rain!
Who knows, maybe this will spark an idea by somebody to create a utility that will adjust the taskbar pins area

Not. Windows Defender runs once so there's nothing to uncombine.

And this is really about a Notification Area icon, not a Task Bar icon.

True. If one feels a need to have it there constantly must be reset after a reboot.
