I have had some problems with various things such as invalid page faults in pdm.dll and extraneous green thingamagigs in kernel32.dll when closing the windowstemp folder lately. These things seem mostly to have started ocurring since installing the latest patch to OE6, so I am considering going back to the previous version regardless of the recommendations from MS concerning the security patches.
I am also thinking about returning to a "Big Chief" tablet and #2 pencil...
Wonder how in the world - ya get thru to MS ? Was going to try last night via my pc but they would accept
my "product" ID - suppose because it had OEM in the middle of the string ?so after hrs of looking thru tech net etc - never found a thing ?? # 2 Pencil and tablet Hmmm did not know anyone remembered those items Suppose I'll drive 40 mi and get daughter's pc - return it back over here to my pc guru and see what he can find out ? Was reading on ZD NET about some virus " zacker" or something that attempts to destroy NAV program and corrupts your Registry - although she[daughter] has NAV and updated regularly. The only thing I can figure in Windows - the START button = start spending money !! urrrgg There has got to be some way to get thru to MS and ask them about this IE6 security patch and the dis-asters. Thanks TE
Hi, Here is what PC guru found with IE 6 ! He got pc up and going and attempted to install IE 6 in daughter's pc again BAMMMMM , down it went !! He said he could put IE 6 back in BUT would have to format C: and start all over - so figured BEST to put back in IE 5 and leave it at that - everything working OK. IE 6 for some
Bill Gate's thang - TOOK HER PC DOWN ! te
Howdee from Western NC PC guru could not explain either - to save contents on hard drive - could only get IE 5~ in. Weird hun??Daughter's puker is same as mine Athalon AMD 500mHz Win 98 se- OK on mine but sucurity ??? patch blew hers? Oh, here is what a local friend told me bout his :"I've got a Pentium II 450 Mhz. that will not update to IE6, nobody can tell me why"
Wonder how ya get such problems to MS - so at least they would be aware of it ? or maybe they realize the problems ?? but are MUM about it - like who cares .
Much Obliged for the note :--) te
I have Windows XPP (IE6) Windows 2000 P (IE6) and Windows 98SE (IE5.5) running with a Pentium ll 333MHz chip. I would not try to update 98SE to IE6. It may be 'possible' but that doesn't mean it's a good thing to do it.
More important with the Athlon chip is to make sure your PSU is one of those recommended, and that there is sufficient RAM and hard disc space.
Sometimes these security updates don't 'bite' (except in the ass) immediately. In this situation, I would roll back to the IE that came with the OS CD (e.g. 5.0 for Win 2000) and try again. I recommend this, because it happened to me only yesterday.
Mercy ooops MerC, sorry What is PSU ?? Interestingly - daughter has 128 , as does my pc , she has 13 Gb Free space and I am down to 10 Gb of free space IE 6 & security patch working ? on mine - so far but took hers down. pc guru said He could put IE 5 back on her PC and not have to reformat it- which is what he said he would have to do - IF INDEED NECESSARY for her to have IE 6 ? nope IE 5 would be fine- I told him.
Daughter was MAD at MS for telling her - she needed critical UPdate and it killed her Puker and my back Pocket Appreciate the Note te
PSU= Power Supply Unit : Athlons are pernickety and to avoid overheating only use ones they recommend. Note that not all commercial systems will have taken this into account, although the brand names will have. Probably.
You seem to have adequate RAM and disc space. Sometimes these downloads don't work properly. You need to roll back to your old browser and try again. To do this first try Repair via Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. Look for MS Internet Explorer. A more radical approach (which should always work, though) is to re-install your Operating System. Try this in the first place into its present directory. It will take you back to the options present on the CD i.e. it will remove any patches, Service Packs and encryption levels you may have added, and a bare-bones version of the browser. e.g. my win 2000 CD has IE5.0 - which is useful to get back to if things go wrong. Personally, I still wouldn't put IE6 with Win98....
MerC's law of Commercial Expedience : never try to contact MS or Premium help lines unless you've got something they want - then you can include it in the tab.
PS Examine user pic closely. Merc is also short for merciless...
Howdee I retrieved daughter's pc from guru - who told me he had to reload Win 98 5 (five) times , he would let it go back to Critical updates for IE6 - crash bammmm it would go again. He told me the clean sweep ?? maybe a culprit? so many things that could and can conflict? He got her pc running fine, did the IE 5 with it's particular UPdate - told me [ to tell daughter] NOT go after any more "critical" updates , especially for IE..After paying 100 bucks for "fix" - took pc back to her - all seemed OK once again, WONDER HOW YA BILL MR GATES ?? for the guru repair charges ?? te
..if yer don' get the critical updates, yer don' get proper security - or rather your daughter doesn't. That's why they're called critical.
WHY was he trying to put IE6 with Win 98SE? They're several years (some would say light-years) apart. If you want to use IE6, update to XP or 2000, is my advice.
Howdee Yur rite bout the "crucial" things. I wished Mr MicroSoft had posted something to that effect
"IE 6 yrs ahead of Win 98" would have save'd me 100 bucks ! PC Guru put back in - IE5 with the security
patch for that version. As my guru told me " many things -programs etc - in PC that can clash with others"
He gave me an educated guess - that the "smart internet clean sweep " MAY ?? have been the culprit-but who knows - so took that out of pc. Much Obliged for the note te
Howdee again, ooops forgot something. Daughter downloaded IE 6 - which worked fine for a spell, then the critical guy says " hey ya need security patch " she got that then it went. Guru did not put IE 6 in.
Now on the other hand - I ordered the CD from MS for IE 6 - works fine - so far - then I got the "patch thingee" still OK on Mine that is, for now at least ..Daughter and I have basically the same PC , same programs etc. Her's went and mine has not - as of this writing Who knows? maybe Mr Gates? te
