New SSD ... How do I?

I've done quite a number of builds & installs using ATA & SATA drives. Today my new Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512GB drive arrived. The only install help that came with it looks to be on the DVD that came with the drive & it appears that MIGRATION is what it wants to do.

That's really not what I want because my old drive has errors on it that I can't seem to eradicate and so I don't want them duplicated on my new drive. The old drive is still bootable and most or all the information that's important to me is there.

My Windows OS will be Win 7 Ultimate w/SP1 on a 32 bit desktop machine, i5 processor and 4GB ram.

Can someone help get me started on installing this SSD?

Thanks in advance... and PLEASE don't beat me with the "Back-Up Stick". Self flagellation has already reduced me to a puddle of Jello.

    1. Turn off the system, remove the old drive and connect the new.
    2. Turn on the system and enter setup. Ensure drive controller set to AHCI mode.
    3. Exit setup and proceed to clean install of Windows.

An option prior to Windows installation would be the drives firmware update, if that is even applicable anymore.

    Mr. Woods & Clint:

Thank you for your timely and helpful replies. Clint, you said in brief, what was presented in the website jwoods linked me to. It all appears pretty straightforward now. You guys have allayed all my fears and I'm going to dive into it tomorrow, after my wife & I take a run to Vegas. Strictly business...no gambling.

I appreciate the help I receive every time I bring my troubles to the really nice people here.

    Thanks, guys.

Remember, there are one or two registry changes that need to be made before changing over to AHCI mode if this was not done before installing Windows:

Zig, I would not known that if you hadn't chimed in. Thanks!
