Fingerprint Reader stops after a few cycles

I have an HP Pavillion running Win 7-64 bit with all of the latest updates that I know of. My problem is that the fingerprint reader just stops working after a few sleep/wake cycles.

I have tried resetting the USB systems using Device Manager but that doesn't solve the problem. Once it stops working I can only get it back by rebooting. I can still get into the system using a typed password.

Any ideas on how to get it back working once it stops?

Have you tried another USB port?

Do you have the latest device drivers from the vendor?

That is an excellent question. From the best I can determine the device driver is part of a massive bloatware that HP has never updated.

In Device Manager it is listed as "Validity Sensors (WBF) (PID=0018). If I ask Windows to update the software after a long search it comes back and says the best driver is already installed.

If you don't use the HP utility to check for updates you need to check the HP support site for updated drivers. Don't trust Windows 7 to find the latest drivers.
