Cleaning the root dir

I am dying to delete something!

I would like to clean up my root directory. I've attached a text file which list the contents of my C: drive. I guess a fair question and one which an answer would be so useful is: Is there a program, shareware or otherwise, that will show advanced properties for these files.

Advanced meaning which application owns the file. It's very possible that some of these files belong to programs that were deleted long ago. Armed with that information, I 'd feel better about deleting stuff.

I'm a bit puzzled. You've posted this to the Win2K board, but a quick scan of your attachment makes it abundantly clear that you've got a machine with a Win 9x OS, and the core Win2K root files are nowhere in sight. I can only guess that you're talking about a multi-partition, multi-boot configuration. It also appears that at some stage you've had Fast Find out of the Office suite enabled. While there are about half a dozen files you should almost definitely not delete, that is slightly off-topic.

AFAIK there is no such utility as you mention. If you are looking to reclaim hard disk space and improve your performance from less System and Registry bloat, I strongly recommend that you go the extra mile(s) for a reformat and reinstall; backing up your key data, license keys and templates in advance. Even the best organised user finds this necessary from time to time. It's very unnerving the first time you try, but it's definitely worth it. A search of the Lounge will yield plenty of helpful and knowledgeable tips.

AFAIK they do. Some of the files you definitely do NOT want to delete are: autoexec.bat, io.sys, config.sys, msdos.sys, command.com and win386.swp. Have you tried reading O'Reilly's Windows 98 Annoyances?
