Free first aid for a wide range of Windows ills

    By Fred Langa

Did you know that Microsoft offers over 500 automated, online solutions for common problems you might encounter with Windows software and hardware? And that's on top of the dozens of always-available troubleshooting tools built into Windows 7 and Windows 8.

The full text of this column is posted at windowssecrets.com/top-story/free-first-aid-for-a-wide-range-of-windows-ills (paid content, opens in a new window/tab).

Sorry Fred but Microsoft seems to have done something to their web site as I got the attached reply when I tried to go to the linked page.Server Error.jpg

BTW - when I Goggled "Microsoft Fix it Solution Center" I got the same dead end.

Fred's link, and the top result from Google, work OK for me now:

    https://support2.microsoft.com/fixit/

    "Microsoft Fix it Solution Center"

    Try again?

    Much-need information; imperfect Troubleshooters

Thank you Fred for this very thorough and helpful article. It brings to light many tools that some users never hear about. My one comment, from personal experience, is that some of the online troubleshooters fail to accomplish their intended goals (no big surprise) and are a disappointment. I think they're great; but like most things, they don't always work consistently.

For example, I've had problems with Windows Update on Windows 8.1 for more than a year (it won't install certain updates) and have tried every solution in the book, including running the Windows Update Online Troubleshooter numerous times. It always reports that it's fixed a database error or some other quirk, but it has never fixed Windows Update so that it will install all updates. I've also run the built-in Action Center Troubleshooter for the same purpose, and tried all the dism and file integrity checks and other solutions for the Windows Update problem. If the Online Troubleshooter actually worked, I'd be in update heaven; instead, I sit and wait for Windows 10 to replace my faulty system.

Fred, YR: solving common Windows problems.
◾First: Check out the Troubleshooters built into your copy of Windows.
◾Second: If a local troubleshooter isn't available or didn't help, check out the Fix it Solution Center site. Start with my direct-search method for the surest results.
◾Third: If you still can't find a solution, expand your search via Google, Bing, or other preferred search engine.
Clicked on Fix it Solution Center site blue site, got this:
Try searching for what you need
    This page doesn’t exist.

Also Mr Fix it doesn't run in Win8.1!!!! Go to Fix it, select the prob, click to fix it, u get : this solution does not apply to yr system!!!!

I see no recent activity on the forum from you on this since this may not be the spot for a discussion specific to your problem. I'd suggest starting a thread in the Win8 forum. Online tools only fix what they are meant to fix. Sometimes a broader search and fix is needed when these tools fail.

But after BACKING UP your system, I would try:
sfc /scannow and if that didn't work a non-destructive repair install.

    --------

Also, if it has been over a year without updates for Win8.1 I would manually download and install them. There have been A LOT of security updates in this period (though the latest package is dated April 2nd):

I'm sure Fred will appreciated all those suggestions.

BTW, both "blue" links do work. The one titled "Microsoft Solution Fix it Center" (the rebranded name for the Windows 8.x fix-its) is SUPPOSED to be simply a search argument entered into a Google search box.

    OK Gunny, here's the scoop.

There are two references to the ("site") in the actual article.

The site toward the top of the page has the link..."https://support2.microsoft.com/fixit/". It works.

The site toward the bottom has the link..."https://support2.microsoft.com/fix-it/". It does not work.

Fred should probably be fired for this...

The two links above posted by BruceR work as well.

    HTH

Just did a search for "install" on the Fixit site and there are two of three solutions that work in Windows 8 (the printer solution does not)...

    Fixit Solutions for install.jpg

No one, not even Fred, has said it works for everything in Windows 8.x
