Try using a USB keyboard if you have one.

I was going to suggest caps lock, but then I saw that X and D didn't work either.

    cheers, Paul

If this happens in specific applications check the programs for add-ins which could be misbehaving.

Thanks for the replies. Yes it is happening on my laptop (I am using my PC for this post). My Region/Language is set to UK, but there has not been a problem with this setting. I have added the US keyboard. It is happening in Microsoft Office and TextPad; I can't find any suspicious add-ins. I have spoken to others who are having the same problem, but no solutions have come to hand. I have attached a USB keyboard and that works ok. Problem is if I am travelling having a USB keyboard attached is too awkward. I need to fix this problem on the laptop's keyboard. I thought it might be a virus or spyware, but checking with my Antimalware and AVG anti-virus, nothing comes up.

Laptop keyboards are inexpensive to replace.

I purchased a new one recently from Newegg for one of my laptops and it was $18.

You could go to the computer vendor support site and check for any keyboard drivers if those keys all stopped functioning at the same time.

I'm not sure if uninstalling the keyboard driver in Device Manager would be reinstated with a reboot, but don't check the box to include the software and create a restore point before trying that - I've never done it yet.

If the loss of the keys had been gradual then I'd start with a can of compressed air and give the keyboard a good blow out.

As a stop gap, you could use the On-Screen Keyboard - don't know where it is in Win 8/8.1 but in Win 7 it's Start - All programs - Accessories - Ease of Access and then click on it.

If they don't work in those applications then it won't be the keyboard.

EDIT - just a thought - have you tried restarting Office or the TxTPad when this happens ?

Thanks Sudo 15: It all happened at the same time. I purchased the laptop in 2013 so maybe the keyboard has decided to "pack it in". I might look at jwoods idea of buying a new keyboard.

I've had this laptop since Dec 2011 and another since Aug 2010 and apart from the odd key sticking, which a blow out cured - they are still running fine, although age isn't a guarantee of anything these days.

If it only happens in Office and TxTPad, have you tried restarting those applications - and I'd still try the drivers.

If they have drivers for the keyboard, they will be on the support site for your model, but their contact support may have had this reported to them before - I wouldn't expect a keyboard to fail after just two years.

What is the model - and we can have a look for the drivers for you.
