If a restart fixes it then it's likely to be a Windows or driver corruption issue.
You could start with an SFC repair and see if that helps. (Start > Run, cmd, sfc /scannow)
    Also a thorough virus scan.

    cheers, Paul

My wife's laptop had a similar problem, although it changed from unreadable to readable just by moving the screen. The problem was fixed by replacing the cables joining the body to the screen, and also the inverter (I believe these are only found on older laptops). So maybe it's the connections which are going bad. Try Paul's suggestions first though as those are easy to do and may well fix the problem.

I would guess it is a hardware problem.
    • Easiest to update the video drivers (free).
    • Followed by swapping video if onboard AND discrete video present moving to onboard and seeming if it clears up.
    • Check GPU temp, fan is spinning and dust is not accumulated. Also check CPU and northbridge temps for onboard video.
    • Can also be the monitor. Attach external monitor and see if same issue occurs.

Does your friend still get it in Safe Mode - this will use the on board VGA.
