    How about a .com key?

When I think of the number of times I type '.com' at the end of a Web address I have to wonder why there's never been a '.com' key, at least not on any keyboard that I have used. There is one on an Android tablet that I inherited, a Nexus 7, but that's the only good thing I can say about the Nexus and its absurd virtual keyboard. Be that as it may, would it be difficult to have a global macro that inserts '.com'? I'm looking at the US keyboard at the moment, and there are plenty of keys I never use: ~ ^ { } | for instance. I'm sure a lot of people use these keys frequently, but for the rest of us they're pretty much spare keys.

    Any suggestions?????

    David

    David,

Get a copy of SharpKeys and you can make the keyboard do anything you want short of making your coffee! HTH

Two brilliant answers in a matter of an hour or two. How many people know about CTRL/Enter? Everyone?? Maybe it's just me who never found this Windows' Secret. And I really like the idea of SharpKeys, I'm going to baffle the grandchildren and get some keyboard cred!

In this day and age, I'm surprised that your Grandchildren didn't show you the ctrl/enter,
    Enjoy

Yep. It's pretty common knowledge, I'm afraid.

Years ago, when I used Opera, I seem to remember there was a tweak where you could add .org, .net, etc. somewhere to the key combination. It would try all of them till it got a hit. I can't remember how you did it though.

Works in IE 11 (will auto complete in some instances) & FireFox 39.0 on Win 8.1 Pro.
Works in Edge browser Win 10TP, it will auto complete in some instances also.

Works in Chrome on Win 7 HP SP-1

For Edge - "About" is at the bottom of the basic Settings. Can't find "help" either.

In Firefox it's <Shift+Enter> for a .net address, and <Ctrl+Shift+Enter> for .org. And to put the focus in the address bar in the first place, you have a choice: <Ctrl+L> or <Alt+D>. Or you can just press F6.

I use a neat little freebie called AutoHKScript to add "macro" keys on my W7 Desktop:

    CtrlAlt @ is .co.uk
    CtrlAlt ~ is .com

Funnily enough I re-assigned the @ to the unused wierdo left of the top line "1"

I have my name, five email addresses and a few passwords on hotkeys as well as several other frequently used "words".
For my pa ss words: I split them into three chunks and use three different hotkey combinations across the keyboard for each one.

I never use CapsLock, like many people I disabled it but then realised it can be useful: I write my own name so many times ...
and my next hotkey will be that bloody ellipsis too and there are several commonly used words

Of course when surfing, on FF, we all know about .com with the CtrlEnter that's what pushed me into automating so many others. I am not really very bright though because I bought a keyboard with many clearly marked hotkeys across the top on the function keys, I have had it for six or seven years and never used one yet!
