Apps for finding potentially unwanted files

    BEST UTILITIES

Apps for finding potentially unwanted files

    By Nathan Segal

Finding obsolete files on a hard drive is a time-honored method of getting back storage space. There is a plethora of utilities designed to help with that task, but they can take very different approaches; here are five examples.

The full text of this column is posted at WindowsSecrets.com/best-utilities/apps-for-finding-potentially-unwanted-files/ (paid content, opens in a new window/tab).

Columnists typically cannot reply to comments here, but do incorporate the best tips into future columns.

If you are looking at removing only pictures, and the pictures may have been cropped or resized, then VisiPics is the way to go. It has been around for years, and also does fuzzy matching, which compares how the pictures look, rather than the more exact and more limiting options of exact filename/filesize/filedate or internal file check like CRC matching.

Personally I use Treesize (http://www.jam-software.com ) which has both functions, offers a variety of ways of displaying the contents, and comes in both a free Personal addition (which actually has a high level of functionality, lacking only scripting support and ability to scan network drives), and a paid Professional version ($25).

I downloaded this a while ago, so can't comment on tagalongs
