    Windows 10 Upgrade.

The W 10 Upgrade is around the corner. I have W 8.1 installed and would like to know whether W 8.1 needs to be updated completely before the upgrade is performed. I am asking this question for the following reason: Since the June 9, 2015 Patch Tuesday I am unable to update W 8.1 All available updates fail. I tried to fix it with MS help (they could not), and I am still searching for a solution. The same will probably happen with updates on the July Patch Tuesday. That is the situation. I am not asking for a solution for the update issue but the question is: would W10 refuse the upgrade, if W 8.1 is not up to the latest update?

If the upgrade would work, does it mean it overwrites everything in W 8.1? Please note, that the PC is running fine and normal except for the update.

Do you mean that you weren't able to download/install June's updates ?

I assume MS Support ran the Dism commands, sfc /scannow and checked Event Viewer ?

If you can't get the updates to work then you won't be able to get the one which will upgrade you to Win 10, so you will need to resolve that problem first.

The download is not the issue. The installation of the updates is the issue. They fail. Since 4 weeks I am working on the issue without any success. The mentioned commands are the ones I ran several times w/o any result whatsoever. I worked with MS support, they could not fix it. It appears the whole Windows update is massively corrupt, including missing files, I assume. It would be a wonder from Heaven, if there would come a solution. Do not believe in it anymore. I do know that I could completely reinstall W 8 (have the media) with all updates, then get W8.1 upgrade and then all the updates for this, then install all Programs etc. etc. etc.

So, the only thing I want is an answer to my question which should be very short (if there is one): YES or NO. If the answer is NO, then I have to go through a W 8 reinstallation first before the upgrade to W 10.

What was your experience of it where it failed ?

What does Event Viewer report for the conclusion there are files missing/corrupt ?

Just a thought - if you have tried the steps in that article to run a repair install - did you create a Win 8.1 bootable ISO ?

If so, what about trying an offline sfc /scannow http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-run-t...does-not-boot/

I appreciate all your questions, but I went through this since FOUR weeks. To repeat myself: none of the things has worked. The event viewer in this case turned out totally useless. What it told me, was already known to me.

"would W10 refuse the upgrade, if W 8.1 is not up to the latest update?"

    MKR,

Safest, short, answer... YES. Take your own suggestion and after 4 wks & all you have already tried, done, just go ahead & rebuild before 29/7.

Thanks for the clear answer. I still have something running, but there is little if no hope that it helps.

What exactly did Event Viewer report ?

Are you using a Samsung machine per chance ?

Which of the logs do you mean in EV. There are some errors but who has them not.

    Clear NO.

The WU error code would help or if BITS is running or not.

The reason I asked if you were using a Samsung computer is because it has been found that Samsung's SW Updater is designed to block WUs and MS are on their backs to get it sorted.

The update fails with either of these two error codes 8007A91 and 800F0922. As usual, MS cannot provide a clear answer why the codes occur or what the reason behind it is. Maybe they can but the explanation is buried somewhere deep in the system.

    What is BITS???

    BITS = https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx

I'll see what I can find on those error codes as I once had a MS tech take control of my laptop to sort out a problem caused by WUs and he was rubbish.

EDIT - Could you check that first error code is correct....
