    Gmail from Outlook 2003

I know this is both an Outlook and a gmail question - I'll try here first !

Recently (in the last week or so) i can no longer use POP3 and SMTP to get my gmail into Outlook 2003.

Gmail reports unsuccessful login and advises me that if I want to continue I have to set gmail to a lower security setting

I've done that and it works, although I find that rather unsatisfactory.

Are there POP3 or SMTP settings that I could change in Outlook instead ?

    Thanks

I guess the answer is "no" - https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255

Is this "real" or is it Google simply trying to shut out Outlook and Thunderbird ?

Or could it be as simple as Gmail doesn't want to deal with/provide support for the now-unsupported Outlook 2003? Office 2003 and WinXP support was pretty much discontinued in April of 2014. Office XP/2002 and earlier went unsupported even earlier.

The block is not specific to a version of Outlook - as far as I can tell it is to do with the use of POP3 and SMTP.
