    Can't Open Anything

I have used every version of Windows and believe that my greatest frustration is with Win 8.

This is a Dell laptop 8.1 64 bit. Something that happens from time to time. Today I opened the lid and logged in from standby only to find that no program that I clicked on would open. I couldn't pull task manager up. The cursor would move fine and I could right click a program and get a menu but selecting open did nothing. I selected restart and again nothing happened. Finally had to power it off with the power button and once started it worked fine.

Luckily, as I said, this doesn't happen often but I would really like to know if there is an explanation. Windows 10 can't get here soon enough.

Windows is not returning from standby correctly. That could be a hardware thing or Windows, knowing which is tricky.
Check Event Viewer for the time you had the issue to see if there are any issues reported.

    cheers, Paul

In event viewer under system this is what I found just prior to the forced shutdown.

Name resolution for the name win8.ipv6.microsoft.com. timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

That is listed as a warning and I see no other warnings or errors until I did the forced shutdown. This info doesn't really tell me anything.

That's just confirming that the hardware isn't talking to the software.
Run a CHKDSK to make sure the disk is OK.
Run "sfc /scannow" to ensure the OS is OK.

    cheers, Paul
