Changing the default MAILTO to GMail

I had no problem with XP and 7, but 8.1 doesn't seem to want to change the default MAILTO to Gmail.

The pre-set default is Microsoft's mail app, but I don't want to use that.

When in the default programs setting, I can scroll down to MAILTO, but then there is no option for Gmail.
I tried changing it to Chrome, since that's Google (although I primarily use Firefox), but when I later clicked on an email address in another application, it opened a new window showing Firefox.

I've looked in various forums and searched Google, but none of the suggested fixes worked in 8.1.

Surely, there has to be a way to be able to click on an email address and get an addressed Gmail compose window.

Thanks, Jerry. That was one of the first things I did - and when I'm in my browser, the mailto link goes to Gmail.
But when I'm not in Firefox, mailto doesn't go to Gmail. The default applications options setup page in Windows 8.1 doesn't include Gmail as an option to choose.
