    Examining document properties (97/2000)

How can I examine the properties (built-in, if it matters) of a Word document without opening it? My goal is to read the names and certain properties of all documents in a given folder, without opening them, because the overhead of opening them would be burdensome.

That's great, except all the DSOFILE examples are in a VB project, and I don't have VB, so I can't see them. Does anyone have the code in those examples?

Sorry, didn't notice that it was mainly for VB. Most VB files are text, so you can use Notepad to view them.
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.multilinker.com/wordfaq/docproperties.htm>Here</A> is a more detailed description of another freebie, this time for VBA. Still looks ugly, think I would just open the file and keep it invisible. HTRH (hope this REALLY helps) --Sam

    Dale,

Andrew Cronnolly posted some code earlier this year in the Excel forum <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=xl&Number=40236&Search= true&Forum=xl&Words=DSO&Match=And&Searchpage=0&Lim it=10&Old=allposts&Main=39959>here</A> - this might get you started.

    Sammy,

You always seem to offer good advice on the lounge. However, reading the lounge posting that comes via email almost always seems to leave me wanting more. It's usually some URL that seems to be missing.

For example, the post that I'm responding to here came across in the email as follows:

See Sam Barrett, MTL Systems, Inc. mailto:sam@mtl.com
    Brainbench MVP http://www.brainbench.com
And the things that you have heard... commit these
to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

I finally bit the bullet and went to the lounge itself to see what you wanted us to see (well I know you want us to see Sam Barrett too <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>).

Naturally there was good stuff to see. But I'm wondering how come the email of your posting seems to be different than the lounge version. It almost always seems to happen.

    Looking forward to seeing more.

    Fred,

If there's a problem with the email, take it up in the lounge.

Do you have HTML mail facility? What you've quoted as being different seems to me to just be expanding the underlying hyperlinks in the sig. If you had html mail, it would show it as hyperlink.

    Geoff,

If you meant the Lounge Matters, I apologize. I regard this as the "lounge".

The problem is NOT the signature. In my email, that did come across as a link (mailto:... was a link). It was just when I copied that to the email here that it did not come across.

If that's all it was, I would not have raised it. What I was talking about was in my email there was nothing in between "See" and "Sam". I checked the lounge for that posting and saw what was missing.

Fred, my apologies. I did mean Lounge Matters; and I missed the point about the missing text- I thought it was only the sig you were referrring to.

    Is this happening often?

    Re: Examining document properties (97/2000)

    Geoff,

No apologies needed - we all read things at times so quickly that we skip the main gist.

I'd say this happens with Sam's postings more than 90% of the time. I'm tempted to say 100% (or that the key item/link is there 0% of the time (never) - but my mother taught me never to say never).

So seeing "See Sam Barrett..." once again, I decided to investigate what was shown in the lounge by my browser (IE 5.5). Sure enough there was stuff in between "See" and "Sam Barrett". And it was good stuff. I think even the text before "See" was different.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you the difference in ease of use between being able to click a link in the email vs. having to go search the actual posting in the browser to be able to click on the link. If it's a current posting, it may be on the first screen of threads (not too bad); if not, it's keep clicking or go search.

Now if I was smart and had lots of time, I'd go back and look at the lounge for all of Sam's postings and see where the links went. But I don't. In the future, I'll probably go the browser route unless (pretty please) this is fixed in the email.

    Re: Examining document properties (97/2000)

    Fred,

It's been raised with Ian (the new wizard- Grandelf if you like), and will be investigated. But it might take a little while to be looked at- it's a huge new job he has.

The reason I suggested it be raised in Lounge Matters is that it's more likely to be seen there- that's where people can raise concerns about the way things work in the lounge- and it is monitored by Ian, as it was before by Mum. In here it will only be seen if someone brings it to Ian's attention.

    Geoff,

Thks for sending this over to Ian. Recall that I originally posted this to Sam - thinking maybe it was something he was doing as unlikely as that may be. I think Sam is active on the ppt lounge so I'd bet the same thing happened there. I'm only thinking of that now. But I've never seen it on anyone else's posts.

    Mum, <img src=/S/eileen.gif border=0 alt=eileen width=17 height=15>, doctored my signature. I'm innocent <img src=/S/angel.gif border=0 alt=angel width=15 height=21> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>. Also it seems that there is more white space before my sig that with others. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>--Sam
