    Question Windows Defender disappeared.

Windows Defender disappeared with the 10 upgrade and I can't find a download to replace it.

Windows 10 doesn't include a Windows Defender icon in the notification area (system tray) by default.

You can put its icon there temporarily through Settings, Update & Security, Windows Defender, Use Windows Defender (at the bottom of the version section). The icon will remain even after you close Windows Defender, but won't still be there after a restart.

You can also check the status of Windows Defender at Control Panel, Security and maintenance, Security.

You are right, I can see that icon. But clicking gives me a massage that Defender is turned off. The same message shows up in Settings. But there doesn't seem any way to turn it on. The Windows Defender folder in Program Files (x86) is empty except for some dll files and a sub-folder, en-US. I thought I could just dl the app but Can't find it anywhere.

You don't have any other antivirus program installed? (See What if You Install Another Antivirus? at the last link.)

Is Real-time protection shown Off at Settings, Update & Security, Windows Defender and you can't turn it on there?

    Bob,

Your window in settings should look like this:
    windef10.JPG
If it shows off just slide the button to the right.

BTW: Are you running with a Std User account of an Admin Account? If you are a Std User you may need to logon as Admin to change the setting. HTH

That screen shows but the on/off buttons are greyed out and don't respond. Under Security in the Control Panel is a box with a red edge that says Defender is turned off. Clicking on the Turn on Now button has no effect. I don't think Defender is installed or not completely installed.

I have Malwarebytes and IOBit System Care and they both work ok. Defender was happy with them in 8.1.

Thanks for the ideas but I have given up and purchased third party virus protection. Apparently "Defender" is built into the 8 and 10 versions of Windows and not available online. There is probably a way to repair the win installation but I'm paranoid about surfing with no virus protection so I'm going a different way.
