Problems with Windows Update and System Restore

About an hour ago I checked Settings/Updates & Security/Windows Update. WU listed one update: AMD Radeon HD 3870 (driver for the VGA card in this computer).

I closed WU then went to System/System Protection intending to create a restore point, to find that System Restore was turned off. This was strange as I had noticed system restore was turned off a few days ago so turned it on and created a RP (gone today).

I turned SR back on and created a RP successfully then closed the dialogs, then went back into SR to check. Today's RP is still there and the SR settings seem to have "stuck".

Went back to WU and told it to install the VGA driver update; after a minute or so the screen flashed black for a second or so then recovered but with 1024x768 resolution. After rebooting the PC it was still 1024x768 (should be 1920x1080 - it's a 23.6in 16:9 LCD screen).

Rolled back to the previous driver in Device Manager, and am back to 1920x1080. Checked WU again and it says "Your device is up to date".

I don't rely on System Restore much. My main defence against gremlins is regularly creating system images.

Coochin, I went through the same rigamarole as you did yesterday. Lets hope Microsoft doesn't ram that driver down again,
Out of curiosity, are you setup with the Insider fast track?

As to system Restore, I also noticed that it was off on the day I upgraded to win 10 but I didn't change it as I kinda forgot about it. The next morning (after shutting down the laptop overnight), when I booted up, I went back and it was on.
So far it has stayed on as I checked it again today.

    Yes, I am Jerry.

It could have been because of the fast track. I thought about resetting to the slow track, but I am using Win10 mainly to see what problems there are and how they can be dealt with, so I will leave it on fast track at least for the time being.

Apart from the WU and SR problems in this thread the only other serious problem I have had w/ 10 was "fast startup" causing chkdsk to run on other partitions when booting after a Win10 shutdown. Easily fixed by turning fast startup off. Haven't noticed any real difference in startup times, but shutdown is noticeably faster.

I have tested many of my programs and they all seem to work as expected. But I haven't yet tried setting up email, though I have seen quite a few posts by other loungers having trouble with Win10's Mail app and Windows Live Mail, neither of which really interest me. When I do set up email it will be Thunderbird.
