    Can't Stop Win 10

    I may have caused myself a big headache. I hadn't received any notice to get updates for Windows 8.1. for a couple of days. So, today I went to Windows updates to check for them and Windows 10 started to download; bear in mind, I cancelled my reservation and the Windows 10 icon was no longer in my system tray. My PC is setup to notify me of any updates and I will decide to whether or not I want to download them.

    The darn thing started to download and I stopped it, but I couldn't get any 8.1 updates without it running. I removed KB3035583 and it took out the Win10 icon. When I looked in my update history, it put it back and I didn't realize it. I tried to find KB3035583 on the installed updates screen and it's not there. So, I'm stuck. I have a couple of backups, but I really don't want Win 10 now. I wanted to wait awhile. Is there something I can do to stop this from happening. There's no way to hide or stop it from what I can see.

    Additionally, I just looked in "restore hidden updates" and KB3035583 was there. So, I thought restoring it would allow me to uninstall and hide it again, but no dice. It does not appear on the list of installed updates. I didn't allow the Windows 10 download to go very far and stopped it, but now I can't get any of my stuff for 8.1. I just have a feeling this is not going to go very well. I do have a couple of system backups for my PC. so that's not an issue. I just wished, the Win 10 icon would have appeared again, so I could have resolved this issue.

    As well as uninstalling and hiding KB3035583 I also hid the Upgrade to Win 10 one as well, but don't understand why the update started downloading on its own.

    Make sure the GWX service is not running - Start > Run, services.msc.

    cheers, Paul

    Thanks to you both for answering.

    I looked on the list of services running and the GWX service is not on the list.

    I don't understand how an update can be hidden and installed at the same time. I think a restore is my only out now.

    Since I uninstalled KB3035583 and hid that and the get the Win 10 download, the only reference to GWX on my machines is an empty GWX folder in the registry.

    Uninstalling KB3035583 is supposed to effectively kill the upgrade dead by removing any effective components - it has even vanished from Task Scheduler.

    EDIT - Just rechecked my registry and the GWX folder isn't empty but has a CurrentWUNotif value of 2

    If you go Start - type regedit - press enter and accept the UAC - click on Edit then Find and enter GWX into the box then click on Find Next where it will do a search.

    Click on GWX and you will see the key and its value.

    You could change its value to 2 if yours is different or just right click on GWX and select Delete, but I'm not sure if it would be recreated.

    Clicking Find Next has found another entry - will have to do some more digging but I think that value of 2 should do the job.

    I don't have KB3035583 but I do have registry entries - must have let it install once.

    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GWX]
    "ContentCount"=dword:00000000
    "SampleNumber"=dword:0000140e

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GWX\Guid]
    @="{65459FCE-17DE-4A54-8E29-6357255F6E26}"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GWX\Reservation]
    cheers, Paul

    I didn't have a restore point that went back far enough to get over the KB3035583, which was installed on 8/3. I did a system restore from a full backup I did a week prior to that. My PC is all better now and that little bugger was offered to me as an update. I deep-sixed it.
