Hp laserjet 1100A printer problem under Win7

I have an old (1999) HP laserjet 1100A printer which has worked steadily since new. Last week my PC suddenly stopped seeing it, worked one day but not the next.
It prints when I press the printer test button but from the computer I end up with the helpful message "error printing" in the print queue.
At this age of printer it runs off a parallel port which I happen to have two of and it doesn't matter which one I use - no printer. So I suspect a recent Windows update has messed things up. Be grateful for any suggestions for a solution.

You may be right about a Windows update disabling the printer. Parallel ports are old technology, and old technology sometimes becomes incompatible as things move forward. You move forward a bit with each Windows update.

It's also possible that your parallel port is bad. Try a USB to Parallel adapter. Here's one from Office Depot for $9.99:

I don't know if you have Office Depot in the UK. Perhaps they will ship to the UK, or perhaps you can find this product locally there.

Finally, perhaps your printer has finally bitten the dust. Hopefully that isn't the case.

Can you see the printer in Device Manager?
Can you delete it and re-boot to let Windows re-install?

    cheers, Paul

My one hasn't complained yet on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit!
Admittedly I got it when it stopped working at work, and I couldn't work out what the problem was.
When here, it suddenly started working again. For no obvious reason.
