Word Count Oddities in tables (97 (others?))

In developing a macro to help paste a Word table with enters into Excel, I noticed what looks like another oddity in Word's word count tool. This was in Word 97 but don't know if it applies to later versions.

If you have a Word table, you can select the text in the cells of a row in several ways:
1. click in the left margin of the page, which selects the entire row of columns
2. drag over the cells in the row to select them all

If you want to know the word count for cells or a single cell, you should be careful what you do.

If you use 1 above, you'll get the right answer for all the cells in the row, which is what you selected and what you'd expect.

If you use 2 above, the answer you get will be the same as below, which will be a surprise.

If you select only 1 cell by clicking in the area of the cell to the left of the text and look at the word count, it will reflect ALL the words in the document, even tho you've only selected 1 cell! Even a cell with nothing in it could show something like 138 words (I had 1 word in each of 3 cells in row 1, 0 words in each of 3 cells in rows 2, 135 words outside the table and selected 1 of the empty cells).

So if you want to know how many words are in a cell, drag over the text. Don't click in the left part of the cell.

Hi Fred:
Just tried it in Word 2000 & got the same results. Never realized that tiny cell held over 1/2 million characters. I must stop drinking.

Hi Phil,

So 2000 wasn't a much better year than 97 in this regard. Well by the time you see this, that New Year's resolution to stop drinking may already be out the door.
