    9OL2K Crash on Exit (2000 sp-1)

    <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15>
    For the last couple of months Outlook has been occasionally crashing until now it is every time I exit. The message is "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". The details show the fault almost always the same location: 0000:01940e7d. I can't recall any particular thing that may have precipitated this behavior. I regularly empty deleted folder, and keep only a 150 or so e-mails before archiving. Sure would appreciate any help. One odd thing I do notice it that last summer I changed from McAfee to Norton AV. The uninstall of McAfee seemed to be normal, but I briefly see the call to Virus Scan when I load Word or Excel.
    Thanks!

    What operating system?
    Where do you keep your data files - local or remote computer?

    Check out the suggestions in <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=out&Number=64210&page=&view =&sb=&o=&vc=1>this post</A>.

    Re: 9OL2K Crash on Exit (2000 sp-1)

    Lief, thanks for the quick response. I use Win98SE, my files are all local, just my home PC, the simplest of configurations, I don't even have a home network, and use dialup modem for e-mail. I checked out the MS reference in the suggestions from prior user questions, but it only addresses attachments causing the problem. My problem ONLY occurs on exit, (thankfully not other effects at all) and whether or not I had emptied the deleted items before or was prompted at shut down. Any other ideas?
    Thanks!

    Did you try renaming outcmd.dat and/or extend.dat ?
    You may also want to run Scandisk - its sounds to me that Outlook is trying to sign off a corrupt or locked file.

    (Try customising your toolbar - does it remember the settings after a re-start?)

    Hi Lief, I think you may be on to something. I had already run disk diagnostics and scandisk with no events recorded. I looked at extend.dat properties. It has not changed since 3/01, long before this behavior began. The system does NOT allow me to rename or move the outcmd.dat file, but does not show read-only or any special attributes in the properties box. I changed the Outlook tool bar to add the advanced tool bar and it DID NOT remember the change after a closure and restart.
    Thanks!

    What operating system are you running?
    Were you trying to change the names of the files with Outlook running?

    Re: 9OL2K Crash on Exit (2000 sp-1)

    Running Win98SE, and I had closed OL. Got to thinking about it and decided to make sure it did not load on boot, removed OL from startup folder and rebooted. This allowed me to rename the outcmd file and I restarted OL manually. Closed normally, then added advanced tool bar and closed, but it did not remember that. However, it has closed normally 2X now. We'll see what happens!
    Thanks for the help!
