    Word 2000 / Word 2002 (Word 2000 SP1)

When a user tries to open a document in Word 2000 that was created or edited in Word 2002 we get a host of strange format symbols in the document. The document is virtually useless in Word 2000 since there is no easy way to delete all the extraneous format commands. This seems to happen particularly when the document contains numbered or dot point lists.

Is this a known compatibility problem? The MS KnowledgeBase does not seem to contain any references to this as a problem.
