    Win2k server startup

Am interested in running a program before the login prompt appears, is there a service or process which will start one ?

Depends what you want to do. XTQ (available from Mercury Freeware) allows you to alter the graphics, text etc. appearing before log in, though I cannot see that you could run an application at this point. After all, it would be simplicity itself to write a small app that could bypass the log in altogether, which would sort of defeat its purpose.

I think it will needed to be installed as a service, and you will need instsrv or srvany from the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/rktour/server/S_tools.asp>Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit</A>

    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.winntmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7959>This article at WinNTMag</A> gives a good explanation.

Bear in mind that a program may not be suitable for starting as a service - what are you trying to achieve?

An alternative is a program called <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.prismmicrosys.com/atyourservice/atyourservice-index.htm>At Your Service</A> from Prism Microsystems but I have no knowledge of it.

    Edited to add:
Just came across this article at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://is-it-true.org/nt/atips/atips112.shtml>Is-It-True</A> which may also be helpful.

    Thank you Leif:
It is really great to have the lounge as a wealth of resource, the problem I have is one which requires a java application to run prior to logon, access a Bell South authenticator, then come back. This is a speciallized credit card app which I have not seen before. We may opt for something different in the future but we are recovering from an NT server HD crash and moved over to a 2000 server reinstalling all apps as before however the credit card app has to be handled differently as explained above. Thanks again for your help I will discuss these and other possibilities with my collegues.
