broken relative links (W2K)

For some strange reason Word 2000 sometime requires absolute links and does not find relative links to PNG and BMP graphics. I have tried saving the document and reopening it from File/Open and have sometimes found that reinserting the link using Edit/Links helps, but not always. I have not found any sense in this and suspect it is an undocumented feature whose rules escape me or what we, (but not they) call a bug.

Does anyone understand what is going on?

Did you set a Hyperlink Base in File=>Properties?

I think hyperlinks are absolute by default in Word2000, unless you choose a hyperlink base.

Thank you, adding a hyperlink base solved the problem, but I do not understand why the Includepicture field with relative links work sometimes without this and sometimes relative links require a hyperlink base to be entered!

Edited by Phil Rabichow on 02-Jan-02 23:06.
Hi Israel:
Hmmm, I find that relative hyperlinks are the default in Word 2000 IF you have first saved your target file. If you open a new document & insert hyperlinks, they will be absolute--since the file hasn't been saved, Word doesn't know the relative path. Actually, I wish there were a switch that you could throw . Do you find Word inserting hyperlinks by default, or was this a document with previous links?

Oh, and if the source picture file and target document are in the same folder, a relative hyperlink will work in the INCLUDEPICTURE field; otherwise you must use the path separated by double backslashes ().

Well and true, but in an occasional existing document, suddenly all or some relative picture links do not work. When and if this happens (do not ask me why it happens), the easy fix is to enter a Hyperlink base. By the way, Insert Picture (include and link) from Word enters relative links, but the WOPR Insert Picture macro enters absolute links.
