Filling cells with repeating values (XL97 (or higher))

I thought that there was a way to fill cells with lets say an asterisk so that no matter how wide the cell, it was always filled with whatever I wanted in it. Does anyone remember that trick? TIA

If you want to fill the cell with asterisks you can use the format picture
**

The first asterisk tells Excel to format the cell so that it repeats enough instances of the second character (in this case an asterisk as well) to fill it.
