    sirefef and Trojan scam

Recently, a pop up appeared stating my computer was infected with sirefef and a Trojan. It just happened to be from a "security" firm that would remove these malware programs for about$140.00.

The notice appeared quite official and contained a an 855 number. When I called the 855 number, a voice from Southern Asia confirmed that my computer was infected and dire consequences would ensue if I didn't have these malware programs removed. I thanked the man and said I would think about it.

I followed advice from Microsoft and my AV company--no malware was found. I'm posting this because the notice is well worded and amazingly official in appearance.

Where did you see the pop-up? In your browser? Upon boot up / login?
What were you doing at the time of the pop-up?
What advice did you follow / AV products run?

    cheers, Paul

This message appeared in my browser as I was looking for something online. My AV is MBAM and AVAST.

That usually indicates you have an older / not updated browser or have turned on "allow pop-ups". What is your browser and version?

    cheers, Paul

I check my browsers several times each week to make sure they have the latest updates. In the case of FireFox I downloaded AdBlock.

Several times a week is too paranoid IMO.

Check that you have pop-ups blocked.
Run a full scan with MalwareBytes Anti Malware and let us know what it finds, if anything. Don't "fix" anything until you have a full backup.

    cheers, Paul

    Smile happy resolution

    Paul T. and Slorm,

Thank you so much for your suggestions.

In the meantime, MBAM responded to me and had me run a scan and send the log to them. MBAM's opinion is my laptop is not infected.

    Have a good computing day!

    Charles
