Windows 7 Acer 5733 Laptop Insufficent space on drive during recovery

    Good afternoon,
I have an Acer laptop 5733 and the hard drive went bad. The new 500 GB drive arrived today. After installing the recovery disk, I choose install Operating System, the default partition size reads GB with no designated size. The process starts, but shortly thereafter a message appears,

"there is insufficient space on the drive".
I recently installed a 500 gb drive on a different 5733 and had no issues. Could the new drive be a defect?
    As always,
    Thank you

Welcome to the Windows Secrets Lounge!

Sounds like the partition hasn't yet been formatted. I would think that it would automatically format the partition as part of the install process.

I would suggest you call Acer and tell them that your computer tech (i.e. me) has told you that the drive is likely bad, and could they send you another one. The reason I believe it is bad is because of the "insufficient space on the drive" message, which leads me to believe that it won't format.

Don't pull the drive out of the laptop just yet, because Acer may want to run some tests before they agree to send you another drive.

I'm tending to leaning toward you. As I mentioned, I have another Acer which is the same model and the drive went bad about 6 months ago. I simply bought a new drive, installed it and ran my recovery disks and all have been fine since.

Boot into the BIOS at power on - press Del several times.
What does the laptop show for the internal drive?

    cheers, Paul

Paul, thedrive is seen in BIOS, just can't load an OS from my known good recovery disks.

I'd download a diags disk to test the drive. You can get one from the disk manufacturer web site or try one of these.
