Custom Bookmark Icons (IE 4 and above)

Just messing around trying to find out about creating custom Favourite Icons. - This link had some useful info.
Though I don't think the ico is a special format - is it? I've always assumed it was a gif, just using the .ico extension.

Happy New Year!

I've always used FavOrg

AFAIK, proper Icons have multiple 'frames' to allow for multiple resolutions and numbers of colours.

Sadly, the ICO format *is* a special format. You can use a bitmap (bmp) as an icon, but icons store additional information that the GIF format doesn't support. So Leif is correct, it stores different sizes and color depths.

I'm a fan personally of FavIcon.com for their simple explanations and free online tool. Now, if I really wanted my icon to look nice I'd have to cough up their $75 fee and have someone else design it.

Favicon! - that's the one - I just couldn't for the life of me remember the name.
And that's where I got IconForge . . .
