Windows Explorer - searching by file type

    Hi,

I'm not enjoying a lot of success setting WE 7 to search by file type.

I visited the Search in Start and typed in search and in the next box chose File Types, place that dot next to all files and contents and clicked the Advanced button and in the Add box I typed in png and let it index all my files and when it reached Completed I clicked the OK button.

I closed We and then reopened it and when I click the Search box and file type button and type in png or .png or PNG or .png it says it doesn't recognize that file type.

I re-visited that Start Search area and it lists a check mark next to png (Hyperlink). PNG is an image format not a hyperlink.

How have others persuaded WE 7 to search and find png files?

    TIA.

I use a portable program called "Everything."
When I type .png in the search box it lists all my .png files.

When searching only for the file type I use * as replacement for the file name, e.g. *.jpg, *.exe, *.doc, etc. The * asterisk is considered a wild card. There's other things that can be use left over from the days of DOS.

Well Windows Secrets was unreachable for a couple just now!

But back on subject, MS pretty much efed up the search function in W7. I may be trying Everything soon!

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

I just checked my Win7 Search on the Start menu by doing a search for *.doc files. Due to the number of drives I have connected it took a few minutes but found 3,680 files of the .doc format. I usually prefer opening a particular drive in Windows Explorer [renamed to File Explorer on Win8/8.1 and Win10] then do a search there.
