Is it worth it?

Action.com has XP pro educational for 37.99. Is it worth the upgrade? I have heard there are some incompatabilities. Wher can I find out more info?

Thanks,

For $37.99, how can you go wrong? It's definitely worth the upgrade if you're running one of the Win9x 's. If you're running Win 2000 Pro, the argument can be made that you may not benefit from the upgrade. But at $37.99.....

I paid $184.00 and thought I had a good deal !!

But read carefully what is disabled in this Educational edition. And if you need this feature... Create a full backup of your system before upgrading anyway.

You could not pay me $3,799 to install any product that includes the Registration/Activation Wizard. That is NOT an upgrade, it is a throwback to the bad old days of Copy Protected software.

i don't believe anything is disabled - however, it is limited to educational uses and no to be used for commercial use. Also, you are supposed to replace it with a regular version once you no longer qualify as a student.

..that should drag out degree courses a bit!

What about the teaching staff? I have a feeling this version may only be available in the US. My secondary school (UK) has a site licence for XP Professional (which is why I can use it legitimately) and if the IT manager had known about the educational concession, I'm sure he'd have taken advatage of it.

Re: Is it worth it?

i think it's the standard academic *upgrade* version, so it would be available to students and teachers. The company in question lists what appears to be UK pricing for it (37.67). i think it's supposed to sell for about $99US. I don't know what the current exchange rate is... maybe 37 = 99.

your school probably paid about the same or less, depending on the quanity and got full versions (not upgrade) and have VL media. The academic upgrade needs activated.

If you mean , I didn't see the price lower than US$ 129;
and the only disadvantage is:
"There are no upgrade rights going from Office XP for Students and Teachers"
(Probably you can't install future security patches also.)

Re: Is it worth it?

that's office - winxp pro upgrade is available for students at $99.00US

the office one is a full version, but lacks a license for a portable, has no free support and is not upgradable. It is patchable within it's version.

winxp pro may have the support limitation, i haven't seen a eula for it yet.
