Missing dll and Windows 7 reinstall

    Hi,

In Windows Explorer / My Image, when I double click on an image file to open it or expand it I get the following message:

    MovieMaker.exe - System error
Missing "WLXPhotoBase.dll" dll file prevents program from starting.
Try reinstalling the program to solve the problem.

I reinstalled the program but the problem persists.

I reinstalled Windows 7 with the following method step by step:

    http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/...ive-reinstall/ .

The dll file is still apparently missing.

    Two questions:
1- Am I right to assume that missing files should be retrieved by a Win7 reinstall?

2- Is there a chance that this missing file problem or other problems be carried over Windows 10 free installation ?

Thanks for reading me. Looking forward to read your answers.

A quick search suggests this may be related to your AV. What security app(s) are you using?

1/ Its part of Windows Essentials, so a Refresh is not likely to fix it.

2/ Its not supported in W10, but you can still download it or find an alternative in the App Store.

Its possible if may be a problem with Permissions. Use Search to try and find the .dll, which may just be inaccessible rather than not actually there. If you do find it, change the Permissions to take full ownership, or you can use the registry hack available here (it works in W7/8/10 as well as Vista), which is easier.

An easy way to fix this is to reassociate the file type (in this case, the image file type) with another program.

Rather than double clicking on an image file, instead right-click on it, and choose Open With.
A box will appear, which will list some programs which can open image files.
    * If something other than MovieMaker is listed, then click it once to select it.
    * If no other programs are listed, then click the Browse button in the lower right corner of the box, and then find and select the program you would like to use to open the image file, then click OK.
Now, make sure the "Always use the selected program" box is checked. Then click OK.

From now on, that type of image file will always open with the program you just selected.

Repeat the process for any other image files which open with MovieMaker.

    Thanks ruirib,

My security app(s) are Kaspersky internet security for the last 46 days and also MalwareBytes AntiMalware.

I can't remember when the missing dll problem began precisely.

Before that I had Kaspersky AntiVirus.

Thanks for the link. I will check it out and come back.

I did not yet upgrade to W10. Still waiting. But I was wandering if these w7 problems could be carried over to W10.

Make sure none of the apps is blocking it. I would even suggest a temporary disabling of the apps to check if the problem goes away.

Did you have to uninstall Kaspersky Antivirus before installing KIS ?
