    Windows10 Start Menu

We bought a new PC two weeks ago, and upgraded it right away to windows10, as it came installed with 8.1 .
We have had problems with the power button, when we click on "shutdown" it doesn't shut down , and comes back on, I manged to suggest to go back to the "sign in screen" and then click on the power button in the lower right corner there, and that works better.
Now, today, we could not access the start menu control, we started up the computer and got the "sign in screen", but after that we have a popup that comes on the screen that says:

    CRITICAL ERROR,
Start menu and Cortana aren't working. We'll try to fix it next time you sign in.
    Sign out now.

We have tried to sign out now and sign in again, but nothing, keep getting that screen, and nothing is available to use. We have turned the computer off and restarted, same thing, waited for a couple of hours, still the same result, just that screen pops up and nothing is accessible.
What is going on, and how long are you expected to wait???
Is anybody else having this problem?

It could be a problem with the PC hardware.
Can you start W10 in safe mode? (Hold Shift down when you click shutdown/restart.)
Have you made the recovery disks? Can you re-install?

    cheers, Paul

Thanks Trev, I have read over the comments from the link that you posted.
We do have Avast running on that computer, but have had Avast on it right from day 1, so why would it wait for 2 weeks before giving us that particular problem.
I do appreciate your help, and would like to add, that while I had posted this question for help on this problem, I also was searching on the Microsoft website and couldn't find any help regarding our particular problem, then typed in my question in Google Search and they came up with the solutions that some people came up with on YouTube, which we tried and it did work, so it is working again.
And also, if this would be a problem with the program Avast, this problem has been around for awhile already from what I have read from other people, then I ask, why hasn't Microsoft mentioned this?
Anyhow, we are just glad that it is working again, thanks again for trying to help.

Hi Paul, I didn't want to post the video on here until you had checked it out, so have sent it to you in a PM, o.k?

You are going to need to wipe it, and reinstall. Don't waste your time doing anything else, and please don't run Avast!
