Styles not sticking when attaching template (Word 97 sr2)

Hi Great Gods of Word Knowledge,

I am having a problem with converting some documents from one template to another. I am attaching the new template to the existing document and checking the box that says "Automatically Update Document Styles."

Normally, this works great, and all the styles update. However, in some documents, the styles do not automatically change. Even though the style box says that the paragraph is already that style, the font and point size are still the old style. They _will_ change if I click on the paragraph and then select the style.

Any idea why this is happening, and how I can fix it or work around it?

Lots of other problems with the original documents, but lets start with this.

Thanks for your wisdom.
Laura

Hi Laura:
I realize that this message wasn't directed to me, but he/she is probably recovering from the holidays.

Does this article cover the situation?

I'm not in direct communion with the Word Gods today, either

I addition to Phil's recommendation, you could check with Shift-F1 if the problematic docs use direct formatting (which Word will keep even if "Update styles" is checked). If so, you could get radically rid of manual formatting with Ctrl-A (select all), then Ctrl-spacebar (Reset Font) and Ctrl-Q (Reset Paragraph formatting).

Thanks Phil and Klaus for your suggestions. The Word Gods are smiling on me.

The KB article didn't do the trick, but Klaus' suggestion did. I will write this fix down. I did notice today when I was looking at the doc again, that it was based on Normal.doc instead of the old template. Someone probably did go in and make all the style changes using direct formatting instead of using the template. I almost feel sorry for them with all the work they must have done, considering the doc is 96 pages.

Anyway, I am just glad that there's a way to correct. Best wishes for the new year.

Laura
