Does Win 8.1 have to be updated before upgrading to Win 10?

I bought a Dell XPS X8700 one year ago today. It has been on the shelf waiting for Dell's support to run out so I can get help from my purchased warranty (SquareTrade).

After Dell helped me reinstall Win 8.1 several times, the PC would run for a while then die. I decided to wait for Win 10.

The question is do I need to let Win 8.1 fully update itself before upgrading to Win 10? Based on past performance I am concerned about anything running on 8.1 before upgrading. The PC hasn't been turned on since January, 2015, and I am hoping it will run long enough to upgrade to Win 10 before it dies again.

    Thanks.

Yes. You need to apply outstanding updates before upgrading to Windows 10.
