Connecting a USB 3.0 External HD to a Laptop with only USB & ESATA Ports

    Greetings -

I recently inherited a Dell Laptop that does not have any USB 3.0 ports--only USB and ESATA. I also have a WD USB 3.0 External Hard Drive. It has 2TB capacity so I would also like to use it for backing up the laptop as well as for my desktop which does have USB 3.0 ports.

I thought this was going to be easy. There are numerous adapters out there that can connect ESATA devices to USB 3.0 ports, but I have not been able to find anything that can connect a USB 3.0 device to an ESATA port. What I'm seeing in some of the threads is that it's not possible to do this, which seems strange to me as I imagine there's a ton of computers out there that are similarly configured as mine. My laptop also has an express slot, but that seems a less than optimum way of working the situation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Casey,

You do know that the USB 3.0 HD will work just fine in the Dell's USB 2.0 port, just slower.

Here's a cheap Express Card w/2 USB 3.0 ports. You're not using the port for anything else, are you, so why not?

Yes--thank you--I suspected that but wanted to speed things up for large items such as system images. I'll check out the Express Card. Thanks again.
