    maybe a stupid question, but...

I have Windows 10 installed (Drive C) on a drive with all my setup files (Drive D).

\What I want to do is go back to a plain vanilla Windows 10 install.

Can I reformat C and then re-install W-10 and end up with a vanilla install that will register properly without screwing up my Drive D (same platter) ?

    That's not a stupid question.

You could unplug the D: drive (and all other drives, except for the C: drive) before doing the reinstall. Then plug D: (and everything else) back in after you have completed the install and everything is up and running.

The install will leave D: alone. Why do you think a reformat is necessary? Why not use the built-in tools to reload Win10 and discard everything else - Settings | Update and Security | Recovery | Reset this PC ?

Jim, my "D" isn't unpluggable since it is a partition on my internal platter.

I reread your original post and came to that conclusion.
