Files on desktop relocate after open/save

I've the habit of having certain files and folders in "fixed" positions on my desktop. Win10 will (usually, but not always I don't think) place them elsewhere on the desktop after I open and edit (and I think just open and close) them. This was not true of XP or Win7 I don't THINK. Is there a setting to have them not get moved?

    Thanks!

Have you checked your view settings? Right click an empty spot on the desktop, Hover (or click) on View, make sure "auto..." & "align..." are NOT checked.

align is selected ... the movement is to another portion of screen entirely, usually (I think always) to the 1st column (which always has some blank spaces)

I just opened an Excel file (on desktop, not shortcut) which is in upper-right region; saving moves it to the 1st column. Shortcuts don't appear to move.
