RAS

    Help!
Recently, I installed a test generator software package from a reputable (supposedly) company. After installing the software, my RAS dialup networking capability will not work. When I click on the Dialup Networking desktop icon, I immediately get an error message: "RASPHONE.EXE - DLL Initialization Failed. Initialization of the DLL c:winntsystems32RASSCRPT.DLL failed. Process is terminating abnormally."
I have tried to remove/reinstall RAS, but to no avail. I have also reinstalled SP6a, but that hasn't helped either. I'm running Win NT4, SP6a with all security updates added. Anyone have any ideas? TIA

Check versions of rasphone and rasscrpt - they can be replaced with newer versions that don't work. Use Dependency Walker to check rasphone and rasscrpt - maybe other DLLs are missing or replaced. Also check Event Viewer - maybe there is more information in Error Description.

Following up on the other post, try entering (from START -> RUN)REGSVR32 /u RASSCRPT.DLL followed immediately by REGSVR32 RASSCRPT.DLL to re-register the DLL in the system - if it is indeed present.

I tried your START -> RUN process, but it didn't work. I got the same type message. Thanks for responding. I'm going to try kaplinb's post and see if that will tell me anything.

    KAPLINB,
I checked Event Viewer and no indication of a problem. As soon as I get some free time, I'll check the versions and also try Dependency Walker. I've never used DW so it may take me some time to figure out what I'm looking at. Thanks. I'll get back to you.

    Re: RAS

The other thing that I could suggest trying is a little more complicated, but - this is a computer after all right?

From the original Windows NT CD-ROM, you can use the EXPAND (may be EXTRACT, my memory is a bit dodgy about this) and re-install the original file from the CD. Open a command prompt and go to the CD-ROM (D for simplicity here). The syntax is something like this:

D:>EXPAND i386RASSCRPT.DL_ C:WINNTSYSTEM32RASSCRPT.DLL

You can type EXPAND /? for more options and the proper synatx if I have it wrong. Also note that the file on the CD ends with an underscore, and that you have to specify the target name. This will also require a reboot since the DLL will be loaded into memory at the time that you replace it.

    Good luck!!
