    Checking HD.

    Hello.
Can anybody tell me what this " Checking HD " is doing ? Is it part of the EULA ? This black screen comes up randomly on my screen, on all my machines, no ill effect so far.

    What is it checking ?

    All fine wishes. Jean.

A completely black screen or a window? If it's a window then that sounds like a piece of software like an anti-virus program.

    Hello.
The proper term would be a " dialogue ". It shows a black dialogue with a flashing cursor at the upper left corner. Not else. Looks like a DOS screen !

    All best wishes. Jean.

    A screen capture would help.

I will of course, try, Jerry. It is on-screen for +/- 3 seconds, got to be fast. There is absolutely noting in that dialogue, just a black DOS looking screen, the works is done in the HD that churns away madly.

    All best wishes. Jean.

Check your Services to see if there is anything from Seagate or Western Digital. Also check the system tray. This is starting to sound more like a HD utility.

Right click on the top border of the dialogue when it comes up and it should stay up. Choose Properties and the dialogue should hang around long enough for you to open Task Manager and look at the running processes.

Try disabling all startup items via Task manager and all non Microsoft services via MSConfig and see if the problem goes away. (Clean Boot)

From the description, it kinda sounds like when you install a program and you get a quick flash of a DOS window during the process.

Download the Sysinternals freeware program Process Monitor, and let it run for a while.

    Hello.
    Yeah ! I got it.
This morning, I had both my desktops ON, I worked on the Acer and kept an eye out on the Lenovo. I got two of these screens on the Lenovo and quickly did a PrnScrn. It did not keep the screen dialogue description. I laid back and waited and sure enough, I got another instance of this running. Being equipped with a mind like a steel trap, I was able to memorize the title :

    DiskSnap.jpg

    There it is ! DiskSnap-2.jpg

When I click on the folder.exe, it flicks on my screen and goes away, for a nano second. When it gets triggered from an outside source ( MS ? ), it will stay long enough for my steel-trap mind to catch the title.

Now the probing question, what is it doing to my HD, has anybody else seen this ? Are we not having fun here ?

    All best wishes. Jean.

Seems to be part of W10 and lots of people want to know what it is/does - try a search. Maybe MS will fix the pop-up if W10 ever makes it to a stable release.

    cheers, Paul

Just reading some interweb postings on this, it sounds like something that used to be around under a different name. It's part of a set of programs that do periodic checks of system functions. Have a look in the EventViewer and see if you see anything that corresponds to the same time.

BTW, you (OP) aren't running a preview copy are you?

    Hello G !
Seeing as you asked nicely, here it is :

    0Pre..jpg

    © 2016 already ? Have we lost a year ?

All my many machines are on Preview, aka Evaluation of W-10. I get this on only one of them, so far.

Event viewer shows no such activity, none whatsoever.

    All best wishes. Jean.
