    Windows Explorer folder properties

If I change the properties (such as the sort order, of the type of display eg list, icons etc) in one folder, all my folders follow suit.

That isn't what I want and isn't what I expected. Is there a setting I can change so that folders can have - and retain - different properties ?

Settings for individual folders should be retained if you don't set/view them in libraries:

Different views for different folders in Win 7

Trying to set a different 'view' for each folder in Windows Explorer -- I have Window 7

You can also customize different types of folders: Windows 7 Tips & Tricks: Customize Your Folder Views

Thanks Bruce - I hadn't realised the consequences of using Libraries
