    Blocking Win 10 Update

In the 19 November issue of Windows Secrets there is an article by Susan Bradley which covers the steps necessary for successfully blocking any attempt by Microsoft to enforce the update from Win 7 to Win 10. This interested me because it seemed very well explained and involved few changes to the registry, which 'won't harm your system one bit'.

Unfortunately, when trying to follow the steps required, I discovered that my registry does not contain the subfolders to be modified. I am running Windows 7 Professional. As an example, the first step requires navigating to the folder HLM/SOFTWARE/Policies/Microsoft/Windows/WindowsUpdate in order to create a new folder Disable/OSUpgrade - but the subfolder WindowsUpgrade does not exist in my registry at that address.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I do not want to suddenly discover that my OS has been changed.

You might consider using the freeware tool GWX Control Panel.

The consensus here seems to be that GWX CP is the tool to use to prevent the upgrade.

    cheers, Paul

A word from the loyal opposition: I still prefer the reg edit technique. One less bit of S/W one my computer and still effective for me.

I tried to do a search on windows secrets website but to no avail. to find it.

    Thanks in advance, Mark.

December 1, 2015: I've gotten some very interesting reports from people using the new Monitor Mode feature. Different PCs are seeing different Windows 10 settings get re-enabled for mysterious reasons. They're not false alarms; these settings are really getting re-set by Windows (it's not happening to everybody, just certain users/computers), and I'm doing research and testing to see what I can do to stop it once and for all. To those of you observing this strange behavior: Hang in there; the next version of GWX Control Panel will have some some features intended to help you regain control and better understand what's happening on your PC.

    Update on who's link?
The reg edit instructions were in the newsletter in Susan Bradley's column if that's what you are referring to.

Here is more from the developer of GWX http://www.computerworld.com/article...-strategy.html I wonder what happens when the unsuspecting public and small business owners get caught on the upgrade mess. Some people don't want it because of software and hardware issues. You should be able to opt out once from MS without downloading a huge file first.

"Over Thanksgiving weekend I started getting reports that the Windows Update 'AllowOSUpgrade' setting was getting flipped back on on a number of peoples' PCs, and it keeps re-setting itself at least once a day if they switch it back off," said Josh Mayfield, the software engineer who created GWX Control Panel.
Up yours, Microsoft! I used that reg hack to avoid Win10, now you're going to reset it automatically? This is why I run Linux much more than Windows, and why I turned off automatic updates in Win7 (I check for them myself). Talk about nerve. Now it's personal. It just may get to the point where I unplug the cable modem whenever I boot Windows.

Attached is a zip file containing a Reg file that can be merged. Extract it and then Right Click and choose edit to see what is in it. Actually I always do that cause ya neva know!.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
    "DisableOSUpgrade "=dword:00000001
Always do a reg backup before trying any reg changes.

Just a question on GWX, I've stopped all of the downloads from MS so do not have the upgrade icon in the first place. Will GWX still work or is the registry hack the better way to go.

I'm just concerned that MS will probably try outright trickery to force an upgrade (like hiding it in a security update) sooner or later
