AVG Free installation fails with error 0xC0070643

A few days ago I sorted out Win10 Home x64 on a customer's new Dell laptop. At first Win10 was re-starting before the Welcome screen, but I was able to get around that. I ran winver which showed Win10 was build 10240.

So I immediately checked for updates & WU installed the "1511 build 10586.11" cumulative update then the later 10586.14 update. Three-to-four hours downloading and installing <>6GB.

After the updates completed I installed the various programs the customer asked for.

When I tried to install the latest free version of AVG the setup program seemed to run through its steps much as I have seen it do on so many XP, Vista, Win7, and Win8 systems in the past (I don't recall seeing AVG free fail to install on any earlier Windows). However, setup threw up a failure error 0xC0070643.

This morning I upgraded Win10 Pro x64 on my workbench PC to build 10586.14 then created a system image. I then attempted to install AVG free with the same failure error 0xC0070643 as on the customer's laptop.

Googling the error code hasn't returned any useful clues so far.

    Have you contacted AVG support?

Have you looked for an installation log file? Try your temp folders.

I haven't tried to contact AVG support yet, and am not sure that would be useful in any case, especially since I have done some more Googling.

There are many posts in the AVG support forums about this specific error (0xC0070643), and the advice offered generally is to run the AVG remover tool and the BFEfix tool but no responses I saw reporting any success.

Everything in italics in post #3 was part of the AVG support thread post...

I have since restored the system image mentioned in my #1 post (to my Win10 Pro x64 system), then tried to install an earlier version of AVG free (setup file "avg_free_x64_all_2015_ltst_221.exe" dated 19 June 2015).

This also failed with the same 0xC0070643 error but gave more info. So it seems that the installer cannot access Win10's firewall registry keys:

You might download Sysinternals ProcDump and use it to generate a dump when the AVG installer fails.

Use WinDbg to see what additional information the crash dump gives you.

In the case of my Win10 workbench system my purpose was to check if AVG free would fail to install, and to see if there is any simple way of avoiding the problem.

I should also mention that in each case the AVG install files were the "offline installer" files.

That last sentence caused me to wonder if it was worth trying the "online installer", so I did. Lo-and-behold the online installer completed successfully.

Something wierd here; the "offline" installers are supposed to allow AVG to be installed on systems that don't have an Internet connection, yet they fail with an error to do with not being able to set registry keys/values for the Windows firewall??? Yet the "online" installer seems to be able to set those registry keys/values (bashes head against wall...).

I also experienced this issue; finally switched to Avast, which installed correctly.
