Question Opening SAS/ASCII dataset in excel

    Hello,

I am trying to get some information out a .dat file but have not been able. According to the webpage where I am getting this dataset from, the file can be in either SAS or ASCII format. I have never used any SAS or ASCII program and I want to avoid it as much as I can, since I only need a few details about this file. I was wondering if there was a way to import this dataset to excel.

The webpage where I am downloading the file is: http://meps.ahrq.gov/mepsweb/data_st...Number=HC-160F

    Thanks in advance,
    Martin

Try renaming the file with a .txt extension (ignore the warning) then letting the file open in Notepad by double clicking it. If it opens as a text file, close it then import it into Excel from the Data tab (2007+)

Alternately, you can right click the file > Open with... > Notepad. If it opens, save it as a text file or copy/paste data into Excel.

    HTH,
    Maud
