Trying to fix a formula issue using "trim"

I am attaching part of a worksheet where I am concatenating the name in two different cells. When I noted that I have to clear out trailing spaces before & after the data ran into problems where the formula turned into a text. Item # 1 FORMULA column cell D2. Items 2 & 3 are also from the original Worksheet and item #4 i just added, bu this works.

    Why isn't item # 1 working??

    Thank you

    MNN,

The cell D2 was formatted as text. Changing it to General like cell D5, gets you the behavior you want.
