Win 7 to Win 10 License/product key question

I purchased the retail Win 7 'Family Pack' that I used to upgrade 3 PCs from XP/Vista, even though this family pack came with a single product key. When I upgrade to Win 10, will one of my 3 licenses be "used up" i.e. no longer available to use on another computer?

Only two computers are currently using these licenses since one was retired, if that makes any difference. How does Microsoft track these - I've never seen any way to "decommission" an old PC.

Yes. The upgrade or clean install subsumes the license of the previous OS even if it is not currently installed/used.

I have the 3-pack Upgrade version of Win7 originally installed on 3 computers and have done Win10 Upgrades on 2 of them without problem. Gonna wait awhile on the third.

A retail license is valid for any hardware you have, including replacement hardware. One license is still available as long as the original is no longer in use.

    cheers, Paul
